It’s almost 80 years since the first ever nuclear bomb was detonated, with the Trinity test taking place on 16 July 1945.
The following month two atomic bombs were dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the Second World War ended to usher in an era of Cold War.
With the threat of the atomic bomb hanging over any potential conflict between the world’s superpowers, what followed was decades of tension with proxy wars, invasions of non-nuclear powers and the fear that the world could end at any moment.
The human race came close a few times due to false alarms, including in 1983 when malfunctioning Soviet equipment blared with the early warning that the US had launched nuclear weapons at them.
Fortunately for the entire planet, the Soviet officer on duty at the time, a man named Stanislav Petrov, thought it was unlikely that the US would fire only five missiles at them and decided to wait for more information, and so our entire species narrowly avoided being wiped out due to a malfunctioning computer.

Sadly the threat of nuclear war has never completely gone away and rising tensions in the world, fuelled in no small part by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, have brought the issue to the forefront of people’s minds again.
Its the country with the most nuclear weapons in the world, and finding a way to stop it from invading other countries without triggering a nuclear war is not easy.
US President Donald Trump has said that nuclear weapons are the ‘greatest threat to humanity‘ and that people shouldn’t be seeing climate change as the ‘biggest existential threat’ to our existence.
While Russia has the most nuclear weapons in the world with over 5,000 warheads, the US is not far behind with a similar amount, and the most powerful bomb in its arsenal is many magnitudes more devastating than the one that was dropped on Hiroshima.
According to Newsweek, if a B83 was dropped it would vaporise everything in a radius of about two miles in a cataclysmic fireball and cause ‘massive destruction’ for about 6.5 miles.

The B83 is a ‘dumb’ bomb, meaning it is unguided, but if it was dropped it’d deliver a 1.2 megaton blast which is the most powerful explosion the US can inflict since it dismantled the last of the nine megaton B53 bombs in 2011.
Damage from the blast would extend to almost 17 miles away from the point the bomb was dropped, and people in a 19-mile radius could expect to suffer third-degree radiation burns.
The damage done by the bomb wouldn’t just extend to the initial blast, as the radiation would spread for miles poisoning and polluting everything in its path.
All in all it would be better if this weapon was never actually used, and there have been efforts to phase the destructive weapons out of America’s nuclear arsenal.
Plans have been made to retire the B83, though Trump slowed those down in his first term and his administration said they would keep the weapon ‘until a suitable replacement is identified’.

US President Donald Trump may be about to revive his ‘travel ban’ idea that caused such controversy during his first term.
It all started back in 2017 during Trump’s first term of presidency, when he issued an executive order to ban people from certain countries from entering the US.
Trump called it a ‘Muslim ban’, with most of the countries on the list having majority Muslim populations.
The ban went through several iterations after the US supreme court blocked the initial attempt, before being repealed by Joe Biden on the date of his inauguration in 2021 as he called it ‘a stain on our national conscience’.
Now Biden is out of the White House and Trump is back in, the New York Times reports that for his second term the US president is putting together a new ban.
On his second inauguration day earlier this year, Trump set out orders for the US State Department to look at countries ‘for which vetting and screening information is so deficient as to warrant a partial or full suspension on the admission of nationals from those countries’.
One of the countries expected to be on the ‘red list’ of banned countries is Afghanistan, as groups which work to evacuate Afghans have said that people with a valid US visa should ‘make travel arrangements immediately’.

They are concerned that a travel ban could be announced soon, and Reuters reports that both Afghanistan and Pakistan could end up on a ‘red list’ where people from the countries would not be allowed to enter the US.
The NYT also reports that other nations being considered for the red list were countries that previous Trump travel bans have covered.
Among the countries that ended up on a travel ban from Trump were Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Yemen, North Korea, Cuba and Venezuela.
Whether they would make a new red list is not clear, but people from countries that were previously targeted by a travel ban have been warned they could once again be blocked by the US government.

In addition to the red list, the NYT reports that there would also be an ‘orange’ list which would limit visa applications but not ban them outright, and that if Pakistan isn’t on the red list then it’ll likely be here instead.
People from ‘orange list’ countries applying for a visa may only get them under certain circumstances, and could be put through an in-person interview before a decision on whether to let them into the US or not was made.
Below those levels may be a third ‘yellow’ tier which would give countries on the list 60 days to fix problems the US claims it has with their visa application process or face being put onto one of the stricter tiers.

A Kremlin representative has spoken on Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s apparent willingness to negotiate with Russia after Donald Trump read out a letter from the Ukrainian President in Congress.
Last week (February 28), US President Trump and Vice President JD Vance met with Zelenskyy in the Oval Office to discuss Ukraine’s ongoing war with Russia among other things.
The conversation escalated, with the Republican leader claiming the country did not ‘have the cards’ to rally against Vladimir Putin’s forces, and that Zelenskyy was ‘gambling with World War III’.
“You’re gambling with the lives of millions of people”, Trump said. “You’re gambling with World War Three, and what you’re doing is very disrespectful to the country, this country that’s backed you far more than a lot of people say they should have.”
Trump also promised to pause all military aid to Ukraine—a move Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said was the ‘best contribution to the cause of peace’.
Following Zelenskyy’s early exit from the White House and the cancellation of his and Trump’s joint press conference, the politician issued a letter to the 47th President of the United States.
This note was read out to Congress in Washington yesterday (March 4) and stated: “Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible.
“My team and I stand ready to work under President Trump’s strong leadership to get a peace that lasts.
“We do really value how much America has done to help Ukraine maintain its sovereignty and independence.”

Trump went on to read that Ukraine is also ‘ready’ to sign the agreement on rare earth minerals at ‘any’ time convenient to the US – an agreement they were supposed to sign during Zelenskyy’s visit, before getting into a heated discussion.
“It’s time to end this senseless war. If you want to end wars, you have to talk to both sides,” The Apprentice star remarked.
He also claimed there had already been ‘serious discussions’ about peace with Russia, but it is not known when these conversations took place.
Now, it appears Moscow is looking favourably on the Ukraine leader’s willingness to ‘come to the negotiating table’.
“We are positive. The question is with whom to sit at the negotiating table,” Peskov said.
He noted that it was not currently clear how these talks would take place, due to a 2022 decree declaring that Ukraine would not negotiate with Russian leader Putin.
“For now, the legal ban by the Ukrainian President holding talks with the Russian side is in force.

“Overall, the approach is positive, but the details have not changed yet.”
Sky News reports that a Russian drone attack was launched last night (4 March) on the southern Ukrainian city of Odesa, killing a 77-year-old woman and injuring three others.
Regional governor Oleh Kiper said the woman died of shrapnel wounds on the outskirts of the city, and that the drones had damaged private homes and started fires.
In retaliation, Ukraine’s air force has stated it shot down 115 of the 181 drones fired in the overnight attack.

A woman in the US has been sacked from her job after she left a horrific Donald Trump related comment on the receipt after she had a meal at a Mexican restaurant.
She went to the Cazuelas Mexican Cantina in Ohio on 2 March and left a message for her waiter Ricardo where she made reference to Trump.

The incident occurred at Cazuelas Mexican Cantina in Columbus, Ohio (Facebook)
In the area of the receipt where a customer could write in how much they were going to tip, the woman wrote: “ZERO, YOU SUCK.”
Beneath that comment telling her server that they wouldn’t be getting a tip from her, she added the comment: “I HOPE TRUMP DEPORTS YOU!!!”
Since Ricardo is a US citizen, this would be pretty much impossible to do, and Newsweek reports that the restaurant said the woman became angry over their ‘one coupon per table’ policy.
They also report that in a post on her now-deleted Facebook account, the woman initially tried to claim that she wasn’t the one who made the comment and had said that her credit card had been lost or stolen.
She wrote: “My credit card was lost/stolen, and someone attempted to use it. Thanks for the notifications! This has been reported through my bank.”
They added that she also posted about the matter on LinkedIn, which has also been deleted, saying: “Thank you for all the recent notifications of scammers and profile hackers!
“I recently discovered a lost/missing credit card and an attempted use/purchase. I appreciate your patience while I manage the situation.”
However, the Mexican restaurant reviewed their CCTV footage and were able to confirm that she had been there.
In a statement the restaurant said: “We believe in the power of respect, tolerance and acceptance.
“Recently, one of our team members faced an unacceptable situation, and we stand firmly against any form of hate or discrimination.
“Together, we will continue to create a welcoming space for everyone. Thank you for your unwavering support!”
The woman had been an employee of CENTURY 21, who released a statement confirming that she no longer worked for them.
They said: “We are aware of the situation with the agent in question. Hate has no place within the CENTURY 21 brand, and we are taking this very seriously.
“After investigating the situation and connecting with the respective broker, as all companies affiliated with the CENTURY 21 brand are independently owned and operated, we can confirm that this agent is no longer affiliated with the brand.”
A GoFundMe has been established to donate some money to Ricardo, and has currently amassed over $22,000 in donations.

Donald Trump’s niece has said that one of the comments he made sent a chill down her spine.
The Trump Presidency seems to be something of a family enterprise considering the way his kids have backed him in office and he’s called out some of the ways they’ve helped him, such as praising his very tall son Barron for picking out podcasts for him to go on.
However, not every member of the Trump family is a big fan of the guy, as his niece Mary Trump runs a YouTube channel with plenty of videos dedicated to spelling out how awful she thinks he is.
One of the recent ones is titled ‘Mary Trump’s CHILLING story of Trump’s cruelty’, and goes into detail about a comment he made which she reckons reveals a lot about him.

Back in 2020 during his first stint as US president, Trump had been interviewed about his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic where he said the situation was ‘under control’ and was told by interviewer Jonathan Swan that ‘a thousand Americans are dying every day’.
“They are dying. That’s true. And you – it is what it is,” was Trump’s response to that.
Explaining why she found the comment so disturbing, Mary said: “So, why, when Donald said, ‘It is what it is’, did that send a chill down my spine?
“Well, for normal people, that phrase means something like ‘things are terrible, sadly, there’s nothing I can do about it, so it is what it is, we just have to accept it and move on’.

“In my family, that is not at all what it meant. What that phrase meant was, ‘Yeah, you’re going through a bad time. I could help you, but I don’t give a s**t’.”
She then went on to talk about the day of her father Fred Trump Jr’s funeral (he’s the reason Donald Trump never drinks alcohol, by the way) back in 1981 when she was 16.
Mary said the family had been waiting to travel to the crematorium, as her father had expressed a wish to be cremated and have his ashes scattered in the Atlantic Ocean.
However, instead of what her father wanted they were going to put his ashes in the family plot, and when she went to her uncle to ask him if he could persuade the rest of the family to respect her deceased father’s wishes, she claims he shrugged it off and told her ‘it is what it is, honeybunch’, and that was the end of it as far as he was concerned.
She then tried talking to other members of the family about it but her pleas fell on similarly deaf ears, and said that when it came to her uncle it was an ‘exercise of power’ that he ‘always wielded against people weaker than he is, or who are constrained by their sense of duty or their dependence from fighting back’.
